Thumbtacks vs. Landmines

This is something I come back to often in my consulting work: the difference between thumbtacks and landmines. Thumbtacks hurt. They slow you down. They might cause you to limp for a bit. But you survive. Landmines? They're catastrophic. You lose a leg. Or worse. The path forward from that kind of damage is nearly impossible.
