Act — Start Ugly
Embrace curiosity, embrace mistakes
You have to remain curious about everything. Constantly. Because curiosity will lead you to places you never expected to go. It's a driver that pulls you into new domains, ideas, problems, and possibilities.
And when you follow your curiosity, you will try random shit. And in doing so, you will make mistakes. Lots of them. More than you'd care to admit. But those mistakes? They're not failures. They are signs of movement, of learning, of growth. Wear on the tire.
I find it refreshing to talk about my mistakes. I embrace them. They remind me that I was trying something new. I wasn't playing it safe. There are plenty of people who never try more than one thing in their careers. And because of that, they become bashful, afraid of making any mistakes at all.
So — be curious. When you're starting out, you won't know most things. The only way to learn is through curiosity. And when you follow that curiosity, yes, you're going to step into a few piles of shit. It's a sign that you're learning.
"Curiosity didn't kill the cat. It just made some of them very fucking smart." I don't know the difference between a smart cat and a dumb cat, but I do know that curiosity is one of the most underrated professional talents. There's a quote I love about Arthur C. Clarke: "I never grew up, but I never stopped growing."
